
Free Pattern: Beginner-Friendly Summer Dishcloth

We promised a beginner-friendly pattern, and here it is! Our Summer Dishcloth is a gentle introduction to knitting and a relaxing project even seasoned stitchers will love. It uses just one ball of cotton yarn and knits up beautifully while you sit in the garden or listen to your favourite podcast.

You’ll Need:
- 1 ball of cotton DK yarn - I used Rico Ricorumi Spin Spin
- 3.75mm (UK 9 / US 5) knitting needles
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
Skills Used:
- Cast on
- Knit stitch
- Purl stitch
- Cast off
I highly recommend the You Tube channel from Very Pink Knits if you need to refer to videos for each of these skills.
Instructions:

Cast On:
Cast on 38 stitches using your preferred method. (I used a long-tail cast on.)

Garter Stitch Border:
- Row 1: Knit
- Row 2: Knit
- Row 3: Knit
- Row 4: Knit

Moss Stitch Pattern with Garter Edging:
- Row 5: K3, K2, P2 to last 3 stitches, K3
- Row 6: K3, K2, P2 to last 3 stitches, K3
- Row 7: K3, P2, K2 to last 3 stitches, K3
- Row 8: K3, P2, K2 to last 3 stitches, K3
Repeat Rows 5–8 11 more times, or until your cloth is square or the desired size. (You can adjust based on your yarn and tension.)

Garter Stitch Border to Finish:
- Row 49 - 52: Knit
- Row 49 - 52: Knit

Bind Off:
- Row 53: Cast off all stitches.
- Row 53: Cast off all stitches.

Optional Hanging Loop:
- From the final stitch, cast on 25 stitches using the knitted cast-on method.
- Cast off all 25 stitches.
- Secure the last stitch with a small knot.
- Attach the loop to the top corner of the dishcloth and weave in the tail end to secure.

Finishing:
- Weave in the cast-on tail at the beginning.
Top Tip: Use this project to practise your tension or try out new cotton colourways. They’re great stash-busters, too!
