Tip of the Week – How to keep your crochet safe when you're not working on it
Share
Crochet projects often take time, love, and dedication. So, it can be devastating to find your project damaged, tangled, or mysteriously missing stitches! This week, we’re sharing some tried-and-tested tips to keep your work-in-progress (WIP) safe and tidy for those in-between moments when life calls you away from your crochet hook.
1. Use Project Bags
A dedicated project bag can protect your crochet from dust, dirt, pet hair, and other unexpected hazards. Choose a bag that’s the right size for your project. For larger projects like blankets, tote bags work wonders. If you’re working on smaller items, a zipper pouch can do the trick. Look for bags with smooth inner linings, as rough fabrics may snag delicate fibres.
2. Zip it up with Ziplock Bags - A favourite with many customers
If you’re short on space or on the go, a clear Ziplock bag is perfect for keeping both yarn and WIP safe. These bags are also handy for keeping multiple projects organised and visible. Simply slide your project in, squeeze the air out, and seal it up. This method is also excellent for travel since it’s light and compact.
3. Try Needle Stoppers
If you’re pausing mid-stitch or working with multiple hooks, try using needle stoppers to secure your place. While these are more common for knitting needles, you can find similar protectors for crochet hooks that prevent accidental unravelling. Even a rubber band around the end of your hook can help hold your stitches in place.
4. Avoid Exposure to Direct Sunlight
Did you know that direct sunlight can fade some yarn colours over time? If you’re taking a break from a project, store it in a cool, dark place. This will keep your colours vibrant and your yarn soft.
5. Store Away from Curious Pets and Little Hands
Our furry friends and little ones often find yarn irresistible! To avoid the heartbreak of chewed-up yarn or unravelled stitches, make sure to store your project out of reach. High shelves, cupboards, or closed drawers can work well if you don’t have a dedicated project bag.
6. Roll with Stitch Markers
Sometimes, leaving a project without securing stitches can lead to lost rows and even unravelled stitches. Locking stitch markers are a great way to secure your last row or specific sections. By placing them at intervals, you’re making sure your hard work stays intact, even if the project gets accidentally tugged.
7. Label Your WIPs
If you’re working on several projects, it’s easy to forget which hook or yarn size you’re using. Use small labels or index cards with the project details and tuck them into the project bag. Jot down the hook size, stitch count, or any other important notes. This way, when you return, you can pick up right where you left off. When you order from us we include a WIP card for this very reason.
By incorporating these small habits, you can keep your crochet safe, tidy, and ready to go whenever inspiration strikes. Crochet is all about creativity and joy, so keeping your projects safe from tangles and damage will let you focus on what matters: creating beautiful things, one stitch at a time.
Happy crocheting!
