🎃 Sirdar's Trick or Treat CAL – Week 1: Custom Touches and a Circular Twist

Pop the kettle on and settle in. We are off on a spooky little crochet adventure!

The Sirdar Trick or Treat CAL kicked off this week, and while Halloween might still feel a long way off, it is never too early to start stitching up something seasonal. With bright evenings and breezy afternoons still on our side, this CAL is a lovely way to ease into a bit of autumnal fun—one stitch at a time.

Sirdar Trick or Treat CAL Week 1 Pattern & my first Cat Moon Square

I am using the official colour pack and a 4mm hook, just as the pattern suggests. But even with everything laid out so nicely, sometimes your hook just leads the way.

Week 1: A Square Start

This week’s squares are all about getting into the rhythm. We are making the base squares for two designs: Bat and Cat Moon. The actual bats and cats will be worked in a later week, but the background designs already give a lovely hint of what is to come.

Now, this blanket is for my husband, and when I showed him the bat design, he made a face that clearly said, “maybe not that one.” So I have decided to make four Cat Moon squares instead. He much preferred that design, and to be honest, so do I.

It also felt like a fitting little tribute. I had three beautiful black cats for many years, and the Cat Moon appliqués reminded me of them. I love how the tails have each been given their own little personality, and I am really looking forward to the week we get to make them.

Pattern Notes and Tweaks

The pattern is mostly clear, but I did notice a couple of small copy-paste errors. It seems that parts of the Bat square instructions were reused in the Cat Moon section and not fully updated. The colour changes, in particular, need a careful look before starting.

One small tweak I made was with the circles that form the base of the squares. The pattern increases in multiples of 12, but places all the increases in the same positions each round. This caused my circles to come out a bit pointy. To get a smoother, rounder shape, I offset the increases in each round. It is a small adjustment, but it made the finished square look neater and more balanced.

I'm just starting round 9 of my second Cat Moon Square

Making It Yours

That is the real joy of a crochet-along like this. Even though we are following the same pattern, every project becomes personal in some way. Whether it is choosing a different motif, adjusting the shaping, or simply taking your time, you are making something that is truly your own.

How is your Week 1 going? Have you started yet, or are you still deciding on your colours if you aren't using an official colour pack? I would love to hear what you are working on. If you have spotted any quirks in the pattern or made your own changes, feel free to share them in the comments or tag us on Instagram. It is always lovely to see how others are getting along.

I will be back next week with more progress and, quite possibly, another tweak or two. Until then, happy hooking, and may your yarn stay tangle-free and your tea always warm. 🧶
